יְהֹוִה

Yahweh
H3069 noun
SILEX Entry
Definition
A reading tradition of the divine name (Tetragrammaton), occurring specifically when the Tetragrammaton (יהוה) follows אֲדֹנָי ('Adonai' — 'my lord') in the consonantal text. To avoid the sequence 'Adonai Adonai,' the scribal tradition of the Hebrew Bible provides the vocalization יְהֹוִה, signaling the reader to say 'Elohim' instead. This form does not represent a distinct deity or proper name but is a Masoretic convention for the public reading of the divine name in certain liturgical contexts.
Semantic Range
divine name circumlocution, liturgical reading signal, reading convention for the Tetragrammaton after 'Adonai'
Root / Etymology
Derived from the root היה (h-y-h), 'to be, exist,' from which the Tetragrammaton (יהוה, YHWH) is also formed. The form יְהֹוִה reflects a combination of the Tetragrammaton consonants (YHWH) with the vowel points of אֱלֹהִים ('Elohim'), instructing the reader to substitute 'Elohim' when the Tetragrammaton follows 'Adonai.' The spelling and vocalization are not etymologically meaningful outside this reading tradition.
Historical & Contextual Notes
This form is unique to Masoretic manuscripts and did not exist in the consonantal biblical text. It appears only in contexts where the Tetragrammaton immediately follows 'Adonai,' to avoid saying 'Adonai' twice in sequence. In synagogue recitation and Jewish tradition, the rule is to say 'Adonai' where יהוה appears alone, but 'Elohim' where יהוה appears after אדני. English translations usually render both יהוה and יְהֹוִה as 'the LORD' or sometimes 'God' for יְהֹוִה in these places, but this conflates distinct reading traditions. This Masoretic tradition developed after the close of the biblical canon, and the distinctive vocalization reflects scribal concern for reverent and clear public reading, not a different lexical entry in the biblical period. In historical contexts, the pronunciation and precise significance of the Tetragrammaton are the subject of much debate, but this reading convention arose in the post-exilic or Second Temple period.

H3069 and H3068: The Same Name with Different Vowel Pointing
Why Two Strong's Numbers for the Same Name?
Both H3068 (יְהֹוָה) and H3069 (יְהֹוִה) represent the same four-letter Divine Name: יהוה (YHWH). The consonantal text is identical. The only difference is the vowel pointing added by the Masoretes — Jewish scribes who preserved the Hebrew text between the 6th and 10th centuries CE.
The Masoretic Reading Convention
The Name יהוה was considered too sacred to pronounce aloud. When reading Scripture, Jews substituted Adonai (אֲדֹנָי, "my Lord") in its place. The Masoretes encoded this practice by writing the consonants יהוה with the vowels of Adonai, producing יְהֹוָה (H3068).
But a problem arose when the text already contained the word אֲדֹנָי immediately before יהוה — as in the phrase אֲדֹנָי יהוה ("Lord YHWH"). Reading both as "Adonai" would produce "Adonai Adonai" — an awkward repetition. To avoid this, the Masoretes pointed the second יהוה with the vowels of Elohim (אֱלֹהִים, "God") instead, producing יְהֹוִה (H3069). This signaled the reader to say "Elohim" in that position.
How Common Translations Handle This
| Hebrew Text | Underlying Meaning | KJV/ESV/NASB Rendering |
|---|---|---|
| יְהֹוָה (H3068) | Yahweh | "the LORD" (small caps) |
| יְהֹוִה (H3069) | Yahweh | "GOD" (all caps) |
| אֲדֹנָי יְהֹוִה | Adonai Yahweh | "Lord GOD" |
When a reader sees "Lord GOD" in the KJV, the underlying Hebrew is actually Adonai Yahweh — two different words with distinct meanings, not a repetition.
The SIBI Rendering
The SIBI renders both H3068 and H3069 as Yahweh, because:
- The consonantal text is identical — יהוה in both cases
- The vowel difference is a reading convention, not part of the original text
- The Name should not be hidden behind substitutions like "LORD" or "GOD"
- The distinction between Adonai (Lord/Master) and Yahweh (the Name) must be preserved, not collapsed
This means where common translations read "Lord GOD," the SIBI reads "Adonai Yahweh" — restoring the original text as it was written.
Where H3069 Appears
H3069 occurs 306 times in the Hebrew Bible, almost always in the phrase אֲדֹנָי יהוה. It is particularly frequent in Ezekiel, where the prophet regularly uses the phrase "Adonai Yahweh" (commonly rendered "Lord GOD").
Original Strong's Gloss (1890)
a variation of יְהֹוָה (used after אֲדֹנָי, and pronounced by Jews as אֱלֹהִים, in order to prevent the repetition of the same sound, since they elsewhere pronounce יְהֹוָה as אֲדֹנָי); {YHWH}; God.
