Hebrew Awakening: Repentance Over Identity
The Core Message: Repentance, Not Identity
When discussing the Hebrew Awakening, the most critical truth to understand is this: the movement is fundamentally about repentance, not identity. While many people focus on establishing who they are ethnically or culturally, the biblical foundation of this awakening centers on returning to obedience to YHWH and His commandments.
Most conversations about the Hebrew Awakening among Black peoples—specifically the Bantu peoples, their West African relatives, and their diaspora (those carrying the E1b1a haplogroup)—get sidetracked by identity questions. Yet the Scripture is clear: this awakening is a call to repentance.
Who Are the Scattered Israelites?
The Bantu peoples and their West African relatives represent the primary descendants of ancient Israel who were scattered among the nations. This scattering was not random; it was the fulfillment of YHWH's word spoken through His prophets. As the Scripture declares, YHWH scattered His people because of their sins and disobedience.
These are the same people who experienced the Islamic slave trade and the transatlantic slave trade—events that were the manifestation of the curses pronounced in Deuteronomy 28. Understanding this connection is essential to grasping why the Hebrew Awakening is occurring now.
The Awakening as Remembrance
The term "awakening" itself is somewhat of a modern label. The Scripture uses a different word: remembrance. In Deuteronomy 30:1-3, YHWH speaks through Moses about how Israel will return to Him:
"And when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where YHWH your God has driven you, and you return to YHWH your God and obey His voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul, then YHWH your God will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and He will gather you again from all the peoples where YHWH your God has scattered you." (Deuteronomy 30:1-3)
This is the awakening: Israel calling to mind—remembering—who they are and what they have experienced. It is a work of the Holy Spirit, drawing the scattered people to consciousness of their true identity and their covenant relationship with YHWH.
The Curses as a Catalyst for Remembrance
Why are people awakening now? The answer lies in the curses of Deuteronomy 28. YHWH declared that if Israel disobeyed His voice and failed to keep His commandments, they would experience unprecedented suffering:
"All these curses shall come upon you and overtake you." (Deuteronomy 28:45)
The suffering experienced by Bantu peoples and their diaspora throughout history—slavery, systemic oppression, poverty, and marginalization—are the manifestation of these curses. Many are awakening precisely because they are experiencing the weight of these curses and beginning to understand why.
Yet this suffering serves a purpose: it is calling people to remember. As they experience the curses, they begin to ask questions. They begin to search the Scriptures. They begin to understand that their suffering is not random or based on their skin color alone, but is the direct result of Israel's covenant violation.
The Guilt of Israel
Why has Israel's punishment been so severe compared to other peoples? The answer is found in the principle of proportional justice: guilt determines the severity of judgment.
Israel's guilt is uniquely great because:
- The Law was given to Israel
- The prophets were sent to Israel
- YHWH Himself came as Yeshua to Israel
- Israel rejected Him
As it is written in Jeremiah 30, YHWH acknowledges: "Your guilt is great." Because Israel received the greatest revelation and the greatest privilege, their rejection and disobedience carries the greatest consequence. This is not injustice; this is the fairness and justice of YHWH.
Repentance: The Path Forward
The awakening must lead to repentance and obedience. Deuteronomy 30:2 makes this explicit:
"And you return to YHWH your God and obey His voice in all that I command you today, with all your heart and with all your soul."
This is the opposite of what the ancestors did. They were driven from the Promised Land because they did not obey YHWH's voice. The current generation, awakened by the Holy Spirit, must do what their ancestors failed to do: return to YHWH and obey His commandments.
This repentance includes:
- Observing the Sabbath as commanded
- Keeping the biblical feasts
- Following the dietary laws
- Returning to Torah-centered living
- Teaching children the truth of their heritage and covenant
The Promise of Restoration
The beautiful promise that follows repentance is restoration:
"Then YHWH your God will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and He will gather you again from all the peoples where YHWH your God has scattered you." (Deuteronomy 30:3)
This gathering is not yet complete. It is a future event that will occur as Israel continues to awaken and return to YHWH. The Hebrew Awakening is the beginning of this process—the initial stirring of remembrance that will eventually lead to the full restoration and gathering of Israel.
Why Identity Alone Is Insufficient
Many people become caught in the identity aspect of the awakening. They focus on proving their ancestry, establishing their heritage, or seeking validation from other groups. While understanding one's true identity is important, it is not the ultimate purpose of the awakening.
The danger of focusing solely on identity is that it can become a source of pride rather than a catalyst for repentance. Some become upset when others deny that Israelites were Black, or they seek affirmation from Jewish people or other groups. Yet this misses the point entirely.
The Scripture is clear: Israelites were Black. Yeshua was Black. These are facts supported by Scripture. But whether others accept this or not should not shake the faith of those who are truly awakening. The power of the Holy Spirit is at work, preaching repentance to Israel. This message does not depend on the approval of pastors, scholars, or other peoples.
The Danger of Seeking External Validation
Many Black people seek affirmation of their Israelite identity from Jewish people or other external sources. Yet this approach is fundamentally flawed:
- Jews are not Israelites (with extremely rare exceptions)
- The vast majority of Jewish people do not carry Bantu E1b1a DNA
- YHWH, not other peoples, is the source of identity affirmation
- The Scriptures, not external validation, are the foundation of truth
Why would one need a Jewish person to affirm an Israelite identity when the Scripture itself makes this clear? The answer reveals a deeper issue: many have internalized the devaluation imposed by oppressors and seek validation from those they perceive as having power or authority.
Yet the awakening calls people away from this dependency. It calls them to rely on YHWH and His Word, not on the opinions of other peoples.
Israel's Position: Head or Tail
Deuteronomy 28 contains a profound promise and warning:
"And YHWH will make you the head and not the tail; you shall only go upward and not downward, if you obey the commandments of YHWH your God." (Deuteronomy 28:13)
Conversely, disobedience results in being the tail:
"But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of YHWH your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you... The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail." (Deuteronomy 28:15, 43-44)
This is not about race; it is about covenant. Israel is at the bottom of the nations—even in African nations where the majority are Israelites—because of disobedience to the covenant. This is why there is corruption, debt, and instability in many nations. The curses are in effect.
The solution is not political reform or social programs alone, though these may have their place. The solution is repentance and return to YHWH's commandments. When Israel repents, YHWH will lift the curses and restore them to their position as the head of nations.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
Throughout this awakening, the Holy Spirit is the active agent. It is the Spirit who:
- Calls people to remember their identity
- Convicts them of sin and disobedience
- Leads them to repentance
- Empowers them to obey YHWH's commandments
- Unites them in community and covenant
Those preaching this message do not rely on the approval of others or the size of their following. They rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish YHWH's purpose. Many will reject the message; this is expected and foretold in Scripture. But the message will accomplish what YHWH intends.
The Scattered Israelites: A Call to Action
For those awakening to their identity as Israelites, the call is clear:
- Remember who you are and what YHWH has said
- Repent of disobedience and return to His commandments
- Teach your children the truth of their heritage
- Obey YHWH's voice in all that He commands
- Wait for the gathering that YHWH has promised
The Hebrew Awakening is not about pride in ancestry or cultural superiority. It is about covenant restoration. It is about a people, scattered and broken by their own disobedience, being called back to their Creator and King.
Conclusion: Repentance Is the Foundation
The number one most important thing to understand about the Hebrew Awakening is this: it is about repentance, not identity. While establishing one's true identity as an Israelite is part of the awakening, it is not the end goal. The end goal is the restoration of the covenant relationship between Israel and YHWH.
This restoration begins with remembrance, continues through repentance, and culminates in obedience to YHWH's commandments. As Israel awakens and returns to YHWH, He has promised to restore their fortunes, have mercy on them, and gather them from all the nations where they have been scattered.
The awakening is happening now. The question for each person is: Will you answer the call to repentance? Will you return to YHWH and obey His voice? The promise of restoration awaits those who do.
