Jews Are Not Israelites: The Revelation from the Jewish Almanac

There is an amazing fact revealed in the Jewish Almanac: Jews are not Israelites. This is not conspiracy theory—it's from a fact-filled book celebrating Jewish life and people. Strictly speaking, it is incorrect to call an ancient Israelite a Jew, or to call a contemporary Jew an Israelite or a Hebrew.

The Jewish Almanac's Clear Statement

This book, The Jewish Almanac (1980), opens its first chapter on identity with these words under 'Identity Crisis':

Strictly speaking, it is incorrect to call an ancient Israelite a Jew, or to call a contemporary Jew an Israelite or a Hebrew.

This is a celebration of Jewish life, full of information and entertainment. Yet it plainly admits modern Jews are not ancient Israelites or Hebrews. So who are contemporary Jews? They are Gentiles who adopted the identity and practices of the people of Judah after being scattered in Babylon and Persia.

Scriptural Proof in the Book of Esther

The Bible confirms this in Esther 8:17 (read the full context):

And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Judeans, a feast and a holy day. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Judeans, for fear of the Judeans had fallen on them.

This marks the beginning of Purim. Gentiles across the massive Persian Empire—from India to Cush—declared themselves Judeans (mit yahadim in Hebrew). The Hebrew mit yahad is a hitpael form, reflexive: "to cause oneself to become Judean." They took on Judean identity and imitated their practices out of fear, after a decree allowed Judeans to defend themselves (Esther 8).

A true Judean is a descendant of Judah (son of Jacob) or an Israelite in Judah's territory. Recall 2 Chronicles 30, where Hezekiah called Israelites fleeing Assyrian conquest to Judah—they became known as Judeans by location. But post-Esther (ca. 483-473 BC), anyone converting to these practices was called Judean. That's how Gentiles became "Jews"—the word "Jew" doesn't even exist in Scripture; it's from "Judean."

From Persia to Today: The Identity Shift

Persia was vast. Gentiles everywhere started claiming Judean identity, birthing what we call Judaism today. Fast-forward 500 years: Yeshua addresses this in Revelation 2:9 (to the church in Smyrna):

I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich), and the slander of those who say that they are Judeans and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

This echoes Esther—people claiming to be something they are not.

Key Distinctions

  • Ancient Israelite/Hebrew: Descendants of Jacob/Abraham by blood and covenant.
  • True Judean: From tribe of Judah or Israelites in Judah's land.
  • Modern Jew: Often converts imitating practices, per Esther 8:17.

Anybody can "convert to Judaism" today and claim Israelite identity? No. You can't just declare yourself something without the lineage or obedience.

Be a student of history and Scripture. The Jewish Almanac confirms what YHWH's Word already revealed: Jews are not Israelites.
