The Scriptural Origin of Jews: Gentiles Who Declared Themselves Judeans
Jews are not Israelites. They are Gentiles who adopted the identity and practices of the people of Judah when the true Judeans were scattered in Babylon and Persia. This truth is clearly explained in the Book of Esther, particularly Esther 8:17.
The Key Scripture: Esther 8:17
Esther 8:17 states: "And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict reached, there was gladness and joy among the Jews [Judeans]. A feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Judeans, for fear of the Judeans had fallen on them."
Here, we see Gentiles—people from other nations—declaring themselves Judeans out of fear. To declare is to claim or identify as something you are not. This is the origin of the people we call Jews today, whether Ashkenazi, Sephardic, or Mizrahi. The word "Jews" in English Bibles translates from Ioudaíos in Greek or Yehudi in Hebrew, meaning Judeans.
This happened around 500 years before Revelation 2:9 and 3:9, where Yeshua warns: "Who say they are Jews [Judeans] and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan." These passages echo the same deception that began in Esther's time.
A True Judean vs. Modern Jews
A true Judean (Yehudi) is:
- A descendant of Judah, one of Jacob's sons.
- Or an Israelite living in the territory of Judah (e.g., Paul, a Benjaminite, called a Judean because he lived in Judah's territory).
But when Gentiles converted and adopted these practices during the exile, it birthed Judaism—a religion not found in the Old Testament. There is no Hebrew word for "Judaism." YHWH did not create it; Moses never taught it to the Israelites. Anyone converting to Judaism was called a Judean, leading to today's confusion where converts claim Israelite descent. That is false.
Biblical History Leading to the Exile
To understand, let's summarize Israel's history:
- Exodus (1446 BC): Israel left Egypt, received the law at Sinai (Exodus 19-20).
- Entered Canaan: 40 years later due to disobedience (Numbers 13-14).
- Kings against YHWH's will (1 Samuel 8): Led to idolatry under Solomon (1 Kings/Chronicles).
- Division: Northern Kingdom (10 tribes, Israel/Ephraim) conquered by Assyria (722 BC). Southern Kingdom (Judah/Benjamin) to Babylon (605-535 BC).
Cyrus's Decree and the Refusal to Return
YHWH promised 70 years in exile (Jeremiah 25; Jeremiah 29:10-14): "For thus says YHWH, 'When 70 years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you... and I will bring you back to the place from which I sent you into exile.'"
Cyrus fulfilled this (Ezra 1:1-4): "Thus says Cyrus, King of Persia: 'YHWH, the God of Heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and He has charged me to build Him a house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever is among you of all His people, may His God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem... and rebuild the house of YHWH.'"
Some Judeans returned (539-536 BC, Ezra 1-6), but most refused. Those who stayed in Babylon/Persia allowed Gentiles to adopt their identity, as seen in Esther. This sin of disobedience created the false claimants we see today.
The Confusion Today
Modern Jews' history doesn't match true Israelites. Their practices evolved into Judaism during exile. Scriptures like Revelation expose them as Gentiles claiming to be Judeans/Israelites. True Israelites are descendants of Jacob; Jews are converts who declared themselves Judeans.
YHWH's people know the difference. Study the Scriptures for yourself.
