G3424 substantive adjective

SILEX Entry

Definition

Having difficulty speaking; a person who speaks with great effort or whose speech is impeded—tongue-tied, or suffering from a speech impairment. In biblical contexts, especially denotes one whose inability to speak is significant, though not absolute; not entirely mute but speaking with great difficulty.

Semantic Range

speaking with great difficulty, tongue-tied, having a speech impediment, not fully mute but struggling to articulate words

Root / Etymology

Compound of μόγις ('with difficulty, scarcely') and λαλέω ('to speak, to utter'). Formed to describe one who is 'slow or hesitant to speak.'

Historical & Contextual Notes

μογιλάλος is a rare term, primarily attested in the Septuagint (Isaiah 35:6) and New Testament (Mark 7:32, 37). In classical sources it is extremely uncommon. In Isaiah 35:6 LXX it translates the Hebrew אִלֵּם (illem, 'mute'), but the Greek word indicates not complete muteness but a severe speech impediment or difficulty. In Mark 7:32, 37, it characterizes a man unable to speak freely, whose impediment is miraculously healed. Modern translations often render it 'mute' or 'dumb,' which may obscure its more precise reference to a speech impediment rather than total inability; the nuance highlights effortful or hindered speech, as opposed to absolute silence (see ἄλαλος for 'mute').

Original Strong's Gloss (1890)

from μόγις and λαλέω; hardly talking, i.e. dumb (tongue-tied):--having an impediment in his speech.
