Haggai
Rebuild the temple — the glory of the latter house
Old Testament · 2 chapters
Chapter 1
Through Haggai, YHWH rebukes Zerubbabel, Joshua, and the people for prioritizing their paneled houses while the temple lies in ruins, attributing their lack of prosperity to neglected priorities, and calls them to consider their ways[1][2][5]. The people obey, fear YHWH, and begin rebuilding the temple on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month after YHWH stirs their spirits[1][2].
Chapter 2
Haggai encourages Zerubbabel, Yehoshua, and the people on the 21st day of the seventh month to be strong in rebuilding the temple, promising that its latter glory will surpass the former as YHWH shakes the nations and fills the house with glory, granting shalom[1][3][5]. On the 24th day of the ninth month, he illustrates via priests that defilement spreads but holiness does not, declaring past neglect uncleaned their labor but now YHWH will bless them; he then chooses Zerubbabel as his signet ring after shaking heavens and earth[1][5].
