Nehemiah 1

Nehemiah, a Jewish exile serving as cupbearer to Persian King Artaxerxes, learns that the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire. He responds with deep mourning, fasting, and fervent prayer, confessing Israel's sins and seeking YHWH's mercy and intervention to rebuild Jerusalem.

and came Hanani one of my brothers he and men from Judah and I asked them concerning the Jews the remnant that were left of the captivity and concerning Jerusalem

And they said to me the remnant who have survived from the captivity there in the province in distress great and in reproach and wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates have been burned with fire

and I said please YHWH God of heaven God the great and the awesome who keeps the covenant and mercy to those who love him and to keepers of his commandments

be please your ear attentive and your eyes open to hear to the prayer of your servant that I am praying before you today day and night for the sons of Israel your servants confessing the sins of the sons of Israel which we have sinned against you even I and the house of my father have sinned
