1 Peter

Suffering with hope, holy living, and the living stone

New Testament · 5 chapters

Chapter 1
Πέτρος greets the elect sojourners, praising God for their living hope through Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ's resurrection and imperishable inheritance amid trials that refine faith, foretold by prophets; believers must be holy as Θεός is holy, redeemed by Χριστοῦ's blood, loving one another through rebirth by the abiding λόγος of Θεός.[1][3][5]
Chapter 2
Peter urges believers to lay aside sin, long for pure spiritual milk, and recognize Christ (*Christos*) as the living cornerstone, chosen by God (*Theos*), while they form a holy priesthood and nation, conducting themselves honorably among Gentiles to silence false accusations.
Chapter 3
Peter instructs wives to submit to their husbands with inner beauty and gentle spirits, winning unbelieving husbands through conduct; husbands must honor wives as co-heirs to avoid hindered prayers. Believers are urged to unity, blessing despite evil, doing good, suffering righteously if God's will, following Christ's example who suffered once for sins, proclaimed to spirits in prison, and triumphed through resurrection and ascension, with baptism symbolizing salvation by a clean conscience.[1][2]
Chapter 4
Peter urges believers to arm themselves with Christ's attitude of suffering in the flesh, ceasing from sin to live for the will of God rather than human lusts, rejecting past pagan debauchery, and expecting judgment while using gifts to serve one another earnestly in love and hospitality.[1][2] Amid end-times urgency, he exhorts sobriety for prayer, fervent love that covers sins, and enduring suffering as Christians with glory to God, committing souls to the faithful Creator.[1][4]
Chapter 5
Πέτρος (Peter), as a fellow elder and witness of Χριστός (Christ)'s sufferings, exhorts elders to shepherd Θεός (God)'s flock willingly, eagerly, and as examples, promising the unfading crown from the chief Shepherd. He urges the younger to submit, all to clothe themselves in humility under Θεός (God)'s mighty hand, cast anxieties on Him, resist the διάβολος (devil) like a roaring lion, and trust the Θεός (God) of all grace to restore them after suffering.[1][2][4]
