Satan incites David to number Israel, a sin that provokes YHWH's anger; the prophet Gad offers David three punishment options, and David chooses three days of pestilence, during which YHWH's angel kills 70,000 and prepares to destroy Jerusalem.[1][2][3] David repents, YHWH halts the angel at Ornan the Jebusite's threshing floor; David buys the site, builds an altar, offers sacrifices answered by fire from heaven, and declares it the place for the future temple.[1][3][6]

And David said David to God Is it not I who commanded to number the people and I it is who have sinned and the evil I have done but these sheep what have they done YHWH my God let be please Your hand against me and against house of my father and Your people not for a plague
